F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote [.. Gatsby...] in the roaring twenties. The winds of antisemitism were felt by him and his novel is IMO a great allogory of deep social and political thought. The characters names have great signficance of the world's social and political environment then.
Hitler had attempted to ovetake the government by force and was imprisoned and published his [...Mien Kamph...].And the winds of antisemitism were known by Fitzgerald and others that did not have to be a weatherman to know that they were strong. The fascist and Nazi ideology was gathering momentum in Europe and in other countries and the dreams of political and social thinkers were being promulgated. Antisemitism and fascism were not invented by Hitler, but his rising to gather political acceptance in the 20's after Germany's defeat in WWI could not be denied and Fitzgerald could pick up the oncomming signals.
In Gatsby, the social and political aspects of social mobility and wealth,capitalism,socialism and the stereotyping of the Jews in some of the characters was brought out by Fitzgerald although he was not antisemitic. There is agreat deal of symbolism and allagory in Gatsby that space and time do not allow me to cover here.
Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was one of many brilliant authors that suffered from bipolar disorder. Hemingway,T.S Elliot,Victor Hugo,Walt Whitman,Herman Melville, Edgar Allen Poe and many other great authors had the same. They left here things for us to want to dream. Gatsby was about a dream.
