Penny, I believe they can live anywhere from 10-18 years if you take really good care of them and they do not meet with misfortune. Bubba (my nickname for him cause I call him Buh-bird all the time)needs to have his water checked and changed often because "poop happens" when he is playing on top of his cage. On the average I clean his cage bottom every 2 weeks so he is not tromping thru previously mentioned poop and seed hulls.
He needs to be kept out of drafts...they don't have a prob with cold really, it's drafts, so I have his "house" away from windows. I feed him parakeet seed as his mainstay but he needs fresh greens and other veggies from time to time...he LOVES kale.
He needs lots of interaction with me when I am home as I am the "Mommy bird". That is how he learned to talk; from day one I have talked to him using short phrases and on a constant and consistent basis. He is still learning new ones! He has mirrors all over his cage so he can talk to "another bird" when I am not there and I leave the TV on for him all day so he has voices to keep him company too.
His favorite toy in life is those little plastic cage balls with the bell inside. He plays soccer with them on the floor and catch with me when he is in the window in the kitchen; it's amazing what this little guy does.
I must always keep vigilance with him around the kitties although they don't always pay any attention to him. And I have to make sure I don't walk outside with him on my shoulder. He loves to ride on me and since I am so used to him just flying onto me at any given time it is a danger.
To say he is a joy doesn't cover it!
Oh and another wonderful thing about parakeets is that their poop is small and very easily dealt with. On that lovely note I will sign off..

Hugs,
Toots
