The 'technical' term for hives is a wheal and flare reaction - a form of an anaphylactic allergic reaction to something (could be medication, could be a type of food, could be an insect bite, could be simply stress).

Got that one from my microbiology course last semester. hee hee...

Still don't know what they would call it in the UK though...
