Ever read Gerald Durrell's books about his childhood years on Corfu, a Greek island in the Mediterranean? He was a naturalist who started the first "zoo" (closer to a wildlife park) to save endangered species.

He made pets of animals of any sort he could find on Corfu as a boy. He had a very indulgent, slightly dotty mother. One of his pets was a mother scorption who carried her babies on her back (as I'm sure you know). He brought her (with her babies) to the dinner table one day in a large match box. His much older brother grabbed the box to get a match for his pipe. Before Gerald could say anyting, his brother had scattered momma & babies all over the table. The family shot out of their chairs & Gerald vainly tried to gather his lost brood. He never did find them all & for a long time after that, his family refused to go barefoot in the house & would glower at him.

If you ever can get his books about his childhood on Corfu (some are out of print now), buy them. They're a hoot! He titled them as "My Family & Other Animals", "Birds, Beasts, & Relatives", & "Garden of the Gods". How I envied his childhood years. They make me laugh aloud when I read & reread them.
