Actually it's a bit of both. I have been known to curse like a (relatively subdued) sailor. And I now owe over $40 to the curse box, at a conservative estimate. But with a little one around, I do try to substitute words. After all I don't want him picking up foul language at home and bringing it to school.

But I also have a real affinity for arcane expressions. I don't even realize it, but I often befuddle my listeners. My husband has this ongoing bit, where he "does" me as a football announcer. He's better at it than I am but it goes something like this:

"Egads, who called that accursed play. The coaching staff must be three sheets to the wind. Odd's fish, Jim, I really think this team is going to rack and ruin."

By the way, my husband and I used to argue about the term "arcane expression" all the time. He kept insisting I meant archaic expression. I finally researched through his vast expanse of language books and found a chapter that validated my use of the term "arcane expression". Ironically enough however, "arcane expression" according to this book is an arcane expression.

(Grin. Geek humor.)
