Phil,
Thank you for your interest in this discussion. The person in question became addicted without being warned by the doctor that addiction could occur if the drug was taken beyond 7-10 days. (In England, they say 4 weeks). After trying to taper off the BZD, he reached a point where withdrawal symptoms would occur even though he was tappering. So he always had to reinstate the drug to avoid the withdrawal symptoms. This is very common with the tapering strategy. In fact, there are people that find it impossible to ever withdrawal because they have clonic seizures and other withdrawal symptoms no matter how they taper. If you use a Google serch with "xanax,danger", you will find a list of some reports about the dangers of xanax.
