Appropriate advice from a Psychiatrist?

I have a tendency to become extremely needy and lonely and just plain crazy. The other day, I was on the phone with a newer shrink (new to me) and I asked him what I should do that evening because I was feeling desperate and needed to be around people. His response: Go to a bar.
Huh?!?!?!? Was he for real? Well, he was. Now was that right??
