would take a piece of paper, draw a line down the middle and put a + at the top of one column and a - at the top of the other. Then, he would start writing, whatever came to mind and choose which column to put it in.
I have done this a number of times when in perplexing situations. Sometimes it helps, making it very very clear that the positives for example, out weigh the negatives, or visa versa.
sometimes it doesnt help beyond getting something in writing.
Tearing it up sometimes feels good too.
