more stupid poetry for a saturday night, ELEGY II

Posted by kid_A on March 2, 2002, at 19:49:13

ELEGY II

when the trees have given up
their leaves, and rain can not
soak the ground

when the presidents have all
been shot, replaced with
beautiful talking heads

when all the mothers have
drowned their babies, and stuck
their heads inside the oven

when the words have all been said
and there are no words and
nothing can be named

when the cities have lost their
people, and the gates have fallen
and no can be born in Jordan

when all the bombs have been
detonated, each one loving like
a mother, smother and kiss

when culture is smashed into
the ground like heat, and we all
gape like ignorant cavemen

when S. has left her lantern and
shot through the tunnel to the
light on the other side

when the oceans, God's gift,
rise and fall, rise and fall
and rise and fall away

when the mountains have crumbled
and the Himalayans have melted into
gold ingots for the tooth

when all the ghosts have risen
in their winding sheets and flew
up into the sky as mockingbirds

when the new gods have become
old and we have lost our language
as we murmur dumb as rocks

when all the animals gain voices
and float on the turtle's back
to a final feast on the clouds

when the sun has grown fat as
a tick, and rolls out it's
belly, lapping up the earth

when our stars turn off, one by
one, God's nightlites, fireflies
that died in the jar overnight

when space stretches out like a
whore and time crawls to a halt
and memory is destroyed

when the only thing is no thing
and you couldn't laugh even if
you wanted to

when it can't finish, when it
can't go on, when it as has
shuffled of it's mortal coil

i will still love you, would
die for you, giving you my love
like a life

even though, you do not care,
i am a little brat, just bones
now, a totem of sorts

can't you see! can't you see!
i was made for you, like a pretty
dress, put it on like a shroud

and we will smash together, and
be one, and never, ever talk
of poetry again.
