Mark, similar to Greg's comments from an older friend, I have one that told me she often gets a bit of a shock when she passes by a mirror, thinking "who is that old person there?" Another older woman in her 80s said when she slipped & fell down the stairs, she couldn't understand why her body behaved so differently when her mind & heart doesn't.

If a person is an old, boring fart, it just means that many years ago, they were a young, boring fart. :-)
Most people still feel young in their heart but do tend to get locked in the music & hairstyles they had when they first became adults. It helps when you have young sons or friends that are always introducing you to new ideas & music to prevent your tastes from growing stale. The styles in clothes in just perfect for me now with hemlines being any length & all sorts of diff ethnic styles added. I fit right in with the long flowing semi-hippie/semi-Renaissance clothes around now.

As for depression emerging at a certain age, I can't speak for others but have been like this most of my life. Just that a name & diagnoses got slapped on it when I was in my mid-30s.
