Me too- tho my father stopped drinking in the end, and was later put on antidepressants and now is like a different person.
Its good you are finding some help, including from the messages on here. I agree that there is the risk you end up looking after other people and not yourself. There is also an increased risk of becoming alcoholic and/or depressed- but the extent of that varies. And knowing the risks and taking action to reduce yours can help.
For example, I have seen how alcohol can be used as a way to cope with difficult feelings. So it could be something I took up too, but because I am aware of the risks, its something I take care not to do.
