That sounds a lot like the mindfulness technique of observing. Watching what is happening with interested inquiry, which helps you separate yourself from it a bit. I've always found the mindfulness techniques very helpful. You've always focused on CBT haven't you? Maybe a pinch of DBT would add to what you've already learned?
