I'll join you in that. My mother's obstinance on the issue is likely to cost us more than we have, because she's about to lose volunteer help in fixing her house.

And I've actually tried to involve the authorities, to no avail. They don't want to touch it.

Have you tried turning her in? Calling the agency that helps seniors in your area and asking if anything can be done? Or her doctors?

Once you've done everything that can be done, maybe the only thing left is to acknowledge your powerlessness in the situation, and recognize that parents, like grown children, have to make their own mistakes. (And pick her up and bring her out when you want to see her. I won't let my son go to my mother's house for more than a few minutes, and my husband won't go at all.)
