In my bad manic episodes insomnia would eventually lead to psychosis. My delusions would manifest themselves mainly with ideas of reference and mood swings of grandiosity or paranoia. I was particularly dangerous in a car. I firmly believed that the radio was communicating to me or people were following me. I would speed and disobey the law recklessly. On one occasion in my VW Rabbit I tore up a golf course with infantile glee. Later when I ran out of gas the police put me in a lock up thinking I was high on PCP. I have amnesia about most manic episodes, but I do remember that in my cell I was screaming about police brutality a lot and almost induced it when a huge officer came in a threatened to make a casualty of me if I didn't shut up. My parents and wife were somehow located. They drove me to the hospital to be detained.

I have other stories of mania leading to detention. I thank God for lithium and that, for whatever reason, I was fortunate to survive these episodes of insanity unlike this poor woman.
