You haven't been a jerk.
When I'm feeling self destructive, I've grown to recognize that as a sign that there's something I'm trying to tell myself, and I'm angry that I'm not listening. Of course sometimes it's because there's something I want, and I'm angry I'm not doing my best to get it, even if I have listened and I am aware of what I want.
I don't know if that is of any use to you, but sometimes the self destructiveness is an attempt to communicate for me.
