Well, that depends on how many people in your family, or as I like to look at it how many people in your extended family rather than direct have mental illness. That may indicate more of a predisposition.
I believe that there is a gene that most people are born with and through life experience that gene gets either overdeveloped or ignored and overpowered by other genes. If the gene gets over-worked than the window of probability of it becoming fully active gets larger and larger.
So to answer your question I would would say that your gene for anxiety/depression was activated because of your life experience.
