I agree with Dinah, you should see a doctor, just to make sure you don't have an illness.
Your description sounded to me like two things -- one is that powerful space you can fall into just before falling asleep, where daydreams seem real and all kinds of body sensations can take place. Where you thinking about anything scary or anxiety producing? What were you reading?
The other thought I had is that what you described sounded like a clinical description of fragmentation - the loss of identity with fear of being just a shell or of melting. This can happen for all sorts of reasons, so again, I think a medical check up is in order. If the MD finds nothing, they can then refer to a psychiatrist.
