Hello Angela,

I too, have social anxiety. Twenty years ago I went to a psychotherapist who apparently did not understand the pain and loneliness that comes with it so we never dealt with it.

Two years ago, I mustered up the courage to see a CBT therapist. What a godsend! Initially, it did not go too well. I think his attitude was he would give me the steps and I would just do it. He did not see how anxiety provoking it was for me. I stopped going seeing him after six months or so because I think that he thought I was not serious about changing. Anyway, overall I thought that he was a good therapist so I went back to see him again. This time, he completely understood that I needed support in getting through this.

In addition, the Social Anxiety Institute has a series of tapes that have been a lifesaver.

It's been a long road that I have unfortunately have had to travel on my own. But....I have been able to make friends. Everyday, I ask myself what I can do to improve this situation. I seek out opportunities to meet people. A year ago, I couldn't say hello to the postman.

I also realized that there are a lot of lonely people out there who would enjoy my company.

So, CBT has helped but don't expect anyone with this training to understand SA. Not all anxiety is created equal even though some will tell you it is. Find a therapist who understands the pain and loneliness and will give you plenty of support. That is what has helped me the most.

Best of luck to you.
