Escher,

There are a few other great guides to choosing a therapist or mental health care professional.

Here are a few:
(these links are Copyright © 1999-2002 by Survivors Corner)
http://www.survivorscorner.com/therapy%20types.htm Therapy Types
http://www.survivorscorner.com/therapists.htm How to go about choosing a mental health professional
http://www.survivorscorner.com/therapy.htm explains the basic ideas of what to expect and what the therapist may expect of you

Dr. Grohol has similar pages (all links and articles Copyright © 1992-2003 John M. Grohol)
http://psychcentral.com/therapy.htm Types of therapy
http://psychcentral.com/diff.htm Distinctions Between Therapists' Degrees
http://psychcentral.com/therapst.htm How to choose a therapist

One more article about choosing a therapist is: A Consumers Guide To Therapist Shopping by Ken Singer, LCSW
http://www.malesurvivor.org/Resource%20Directory/consumer.htm © 2003 MS - All Rights Reserved

I personally used the Singer article and the resources from Survivor's Corner to call and interview potential therapists last year. I ended up interviewing four in person after calling and talking to eight or nine by phone.

So far so good with current choice.

Smart shopping helps but it is so darn hard when one isn't feeling up to even lifting a finger to dial the phone.

I was in such a difficult space when I was doing all my therapist shopping so I just made one phone call a day or returned one call a day. Other than that I couldn't handle the overwhelm of it all. Bit by bit I crawled out and found someone to work with that I trust and feel comfortable with.
