A note about amphetamine metabolites...

When I was trying selegiline (this was long before the patch, before it was commonly used as an antidepressant) I was given a toxicology screen at some point. Now, selegiline is metabolized into l-amphetamine and l-methamphetamine, so I tested positive for amphetamine. (Mind you, because these are l-amphetamines, they have little therapeutic effect, so don't get too excited.) Fortunately I knew to expect this, so I was able to explain this result to the doctor's satisfaction.

In contrast, I've never tested positive for amphetamine while on Parnate, although I have had tox screens while taking Parnate too (and I've been on it for much longer). I think the "amphetamine metabolite hypothesis" (with respect to tranylcypromine) is a myth, although it's possible that TCP itself (or some of its actual metabolites) could have amphetamine-like activity. (If you look at the chemical structure of TCP, it's very similar to amphetamine.)
