I've always been irritated by Australian books. I've read one or two of Peter Carey's. It puzzles me why I respond like this. The only Austrlalian book I actually got enthralled by was "Dead Europe" (Christos Tsiolkas) (because it was so unaustralian?)

Although I do have a very soft spot for "Wake In Fright", the celluloid of which film was recently discovered in a Hollywood vault and is being cleaned up for rerelease. It is about human relations (loosely termed) in the Australian outback. I haven't read the book.
