Zinc picolinate and depression

Posted by Lao Tzu on May 7, 2010, at 11:00:08

I find that the form of zinc that helps me the most is zinc picolinate, NOT zinc gluconate. I use the Solgar brand, which is 22mg per tablet. I take two tablets during the day plus one more tablet at bedtime. I find this dosage works well for me. Initially, you have to get used to zinc in your system. The best way to do this is to start off slow, say half a tablet, then one whole tablet, etc. etc. until you've reached a dosage you can tolerate. I can't seem to tolerate anymore than 66mg per day. Some people can tolerate even higher dosages, but consider taking a little copper if you're taking 80mg or more of zinc daily. There is a balance that must be reached between the two. However, if you are schizophrenic and have high tissue copper, it is best to NOT supplement with any copper. High copper causes all kinds of problems, especially in schizophrenics.
