Supplements and Schizo/Bipolar

Posted by Lao Tzu on February 24, 2010, at 10:21:16

I have determined some supplements that are very helpful if you are schizophrenic. They might be added on to your antipsychotic treatment if you are experiencing mood problems, depression, anxiety, low energy as is the case with myself, i.e. if you have an affective disorder associated with psychosis. The most important factor is to take the medicine. Supplements can help with mood problems. Here is what I've found out experimenting on myself:

Vitamins E and C are helpful. Zinc picolinate and manganese are helpful. Vitamins B1, B12, and B6 are helpful. Fish and borage oils are helpful. For some, high dose Niacin is helpful. It really depends on your deficiencies. For instance, I need a large dose of vitamin B1 everyday for mood and to sleep well. I need B6 and zinc for depression. B12 is helpful if you are deficient in this one. For some people, high dose folic acid is necessary for depression. Everyone is different, so I'm just giving you a little information what MIGHT be helpful to some people. Recently, I started taking a little B2 in the evening with some B1 and B6. B2 is a calming vitamin and may help some people.
The most difficult task is trying to figure out dosages. This may take some time. No doctor is going to tell you exactly how much you need because he wouldn't know that. It would be up to you to figure it out, but working with a naturopathic doctor may not be a bad idea because of his or her experience with natural nutrients. Personally, I've never worked with a naturopathic doctor nor do I have any professional experience in nutrition. I've worked through it by myself for about 4 years. It has paid off in many ways. Again, I'm just putting this information out there to anyone who is seeking some possible solutions. It's not a miracle, but it has improved my depression and mood problems as well as anxiety issues. Also, please be careful when browsing the internet for miracle cures. No matter what they say, it almost is never the case. But I do believe that certain vitamins, minerals, and fatty acids can help many people if used properly. I'm a shining example of it. I'm not saying supplements are absolutely necessary. Some people do just fine with medications, but in my case, since I have an affective disorder associated with schizophrenia, the supplements are very helpful to me. It is a very subjective experience.
