Supplements for anxiety

Posted by Lao Tzu on July 22, 2008, at 5:57:58

Also wanted to add that dosage and time of day you take individual supplements is critical. This is what has helped me:

1. Vitamin B3 (NIacinamide form is the best!) 60mg-250mg during the day. Some sources even recommend 500mg. If you don't like the full 250mg tablet, then you can cut the tablet into 4 pieces with a pill cutter (from any drug store) and take only what you need to feel better.

2. Vitamin B6--50-100mg in morning and 50-100mg at bedtime.

3. Vitamin B12--250mcg-500mcg. Most tablets come in 1,000mcg tablets, but you can cut these into 4 pieces with a pill cutter. I always recommend starting at a low dosage first.

4. Calcium--anywhere from 300mg-600mg. Personally, I like the Caltrate brand. I think it works excellent.

5. Magnesium citrate or aspartate-- 200mg dosages

6. Zinc--anywhere from 15mg-50mg. Remember, you can always cut the pill into four pieces if the whole amount seems too much for you.

7. Kava Kava--excellent herb for anxiety. Take before work or school. Follow dosing instructions on bottle, as taking too much Kava could leave you feeling overstimulated.

8. 5-htp--Take at bedtime for sleep and increasing serotonin levels. Makes some people nauseous, so you can take ginger extract to counteract the naseau. Ginger is great for naseau.

9. L-Taurine--I find 1,000mg helps me.

10. Glycine--I find 1,000mg to 2,000mg helps me.

11. Magnesium Glycinate---I would only take this at bedtime (1 tablet). I didn't like taking it during the day. It does help with anxiety. I wouldn't recommend taking Magnesium glycinate if you already are taking a magnesium supplement and glycine. Either try magnesium glycinate or glycine, not both.

Important Note: DON'T take all of these together. The best way to find the right combination is to try one or two together at a time to see if they work well together. Taking TOO MANY different supplements together could possibly leave you too sedated, numb,or lethargic. The key is to find the bare minimum number of supplements that help with your anxiety and then just stick with that. Maybe you only need one supplement, or two, or three, etc. etc. You have to experiment a little.
