Treating insomnia from fish oil?

Posted by saturn on April 19, 2008, at 20:16:20

I've been taking fish oil for over a year (primarily for ADHD), about 1000 mg EPA/140 mg DHA daily with decent improvement in concentration.

However, after careful observation in playing with the doses I'm pretty sure it is the main factor in my insomnia (and perhaps anxiety).

While there seems to be some controversy over the optimal EPA/DHA ratio, I did not benefit from standard fish oil preparations, and there are arguments that DHA is less useful and perhaps counterproductive for cognitive effects

http://www.fattyacidtrip.com/so-whats-so-bad-about-dha-anyway/).

I seem to need at least one gram of EPA and currently take an EPA/DHA ratio of about 7.

Might a lower EPA/DHA ratio be less likely to cause insomnia while still maintaining cognitive effects? I'm considering a lower ratio of about 4 (Nordic Naturals).

I guess the only way to know is to try, but I'd greatly appreciate any insight anyone may have.

(BTW, after reading some old posts I've tried taurine 1000mg/day with no benefit, and magnesium gives me hypotension.)

Thanks...Peace...Saturn.
