Im my experience Ativan (Lorazepam) is weaker than Xanax. Xanax is the gold standard in benzodiazepine drugs for it's calmative effect. My opinion is you should only take benzo drugs when you really can't stand the agitation, it would be worse to get hooked on benzo drugs than having the agitation in the first place. A simple beta blocker like propranonol may help you. Drugs will work quicker than alternative therapies. Alternative therapies usually do work with the body rather than against it.

I recommend Vitamin C and a combination of GABA, Glycine, Inositol, Niacinamide and Vitamin B6. There are a few products like GABA calm etc that use this combination, although I find I have to take 4 or 5 times the dosage for it to have an effect. Valerian tea can also be useful. Meditation or a decent self hypnosis CD is also very useful. Paul McKennas 'Deep Relaxation' CD is good.

Niacinamide can work as well as benzos but the dosage is rather high for my liking at least 1 - 5 grams per day. You should definitely research this before you take it.

This article is very useful (see below) Supplements that work to reduce anxiety are usually somewhat helpful with reducing agitation.
