yay - less taurine is more

Posted by LOOPS on January 26, 2007, at 15:36:00

so I have a love-hate relationship with taurine. It's very effective for anxiety for me coupled with a little magnesium, but only when I take a small amount. More makes me too tired and ironically I then can't sleep also.

However - recently I've just been opening up a cap and putting a little in my tea - say 200mg - that seems great. It is water-soluble as well. Much more and I start getting out of balance I think with other aminos.

I read that taurine can build up - so initially you can take a good wallop of it - like a gram, then after that taper off until you just take a bit. That's my theory anyway.

It is interesting that taurine in animal products (the only source) gets destroyed by heat - as opposed to other substances such as B12 which don't.

It is also my theory that glutamine levels can drop with too much taurine. It is now well-known that too much glycine reduces taurine (as in if you take large amounts of magnesium glycinate).

If you don't want to take taurine, you can always take more B6 and zinc to encourage your body to make more of it.

So take less if it worked for you but then you felt like crap - it works very well for me at much lower levels.

I also btw found that liver tablets are very helpful for me - I take the strong ones - Beverly International I think but you can buy other brands for cheaper that are still concentrated.
