you might try yerba mate
it makes a nice tea, kind of astringent with a good flavor (also great mixed with mint or fruit herbal teas). widely available, not too expensive. you can even make it in your coffee maker if you want.

it contains an alkaloid (matein) that has stimulant properties without quite as much peripheral adrenergic effect as coffee. (not so much jitters)

Also, some people react to strong black tea better than to strong black coffee. the theobromine in tea might be a better stimulant for your body

personally, I use provigil, which I got a script for after suffering from really bad sleepiness as a result of my antidepressant regimine...
