I just took a look at the literature, and there has been a great deal of recent interest in using inositol as both a primary or secondary (augmentative) treatment agent for mood disorders. It apparently is quite helpful for panic disorder. Bipolars seem to respond in one of three ways: it worsens their condition, it does nothing whatsoever, or it significantly improves their mood. One recent study correlated adverse effects to underlying hostility/anger. It certainly is a harmless intervention, in the physiological sense. It is a simple sugar, being only slightly re-arranged from the original, glucose. You probably consume some already, every day. Maybe some people just need a little more than diet can readily provide?
