This first article in summary concludes that low ranking males, also called subordinates, (babboons were the animals being tested) that their Pituitary galnd has lost sensitivity to CRF (Corticotrophin Releasing Factor). Pituitary is part of HPA axis which is consistently found abnormal in affective disorders, and CRF is a major player in current antidepressant research. Its a peptide secreted by the brain during stress.

Now here is a second article demonstrating that Capsaicin has the ability to enhance sensitivity of the pituitary to CRF. Pretty interesting.
