In reply to Ron, why Lithobid in place Li Orotate?, posted by taylor18 on January 2, 2004, at 3:21:20

Hi Taylor

> Why do you take Lithobid in place of Lithium Orotate? Is the latter not potent enough? Are the beneficial effects not the same? Lithium carbonate seems much worse on the system than Lithium Orotate, even if the Orotate might have a few problems of it's own.

I was considering lithium orotate back in June 2003 so I asked Larry Hoover for his analysis of the claims made on the Serenity web-site. Here is Larry’s response:

The lithium orotate issue comes up periodically on this board. Here is a subsequent post by Mr. Hoover on the topic:

You might read through both of the threads associated with the above links. Also you might want to search this site for lithium orotate. BarbaraCat had a bad experience with lithium orotate when she used it in place of her lithium carbonate. Here is one of her posts discussing the issue:

It’s been a while since I looked into this issue, but as I recall, my major conclusions (based on the input of Larry, BCat and others) were that: 1) there is little or no basis for the claim that lithium orotate has the same mood stabilizing effectiveness (at the much reduced Li ion concentration) when compared to the widely accepted prescription lithium carbonate (e.g.; Lithobid, etc) medications taken in the normal dose range; 2) I saw no benefit to warrant the higher cost of lithium orotate.
