is -not- ground breaking. ritalin was popular for those on sedating neuroleptics in the 60s. in the 50s-60s, maybe into the 70s, diet pills (read: amphetamines, sometimes amphetamine and sedative combos) were routinely used in everybody, including those with a label of Schizophrenia.
I dunno about mania. I read on some old school shrink's website that he'd used dexedrine in some cases of acute mania...something about reducing distractibility, maybe? i dunno. sounded creepy, like medical torture to me, but dude man was adamant that it 'worked,' however he chose to gauge success.
