Depression after Eating - Microbiome

Posted by alchemy on June 24, 2019, at 19:51:29

I have 20 years of googling and study related to my depression. I want to share my unique experience related to depression after eating. This isn't the distinct cause of my depression - but I am positive that there is a correlation between a large meal and/or saturated fat consumption. I found a couple other posts online for some that have had this same experience, although there may just be a few of us. (Age = wisdom = all bodies are different)

My body's reaction stood out more when PROBIOTICS made the food reactions worse (specifically the kind that are "supposed" to help your mood).

For a short while I wondered if cashews were doing something to my mood because I noticed if I ate a lot of them I was more down in an hour or two. I already noticed that if I had fatty meat, especially with a large meal, I headed for a definite depression in a couple of hours.

My best guess is it is due to the gram-negative bacteria in my gut that release endotoxins/lipopolysaccharides - which trigger an immune reaction (we all know that the immune system can affect the mood). Saturated fat increases these endotoxins. Studies have been done that show injecting endotoxins = depression.

I also now realize that this is probably related to why I got depressed when trying to go Keto (besides carbs = tryptophan). I have always not physically felt well when I eat sugar, even a banana. So I assumed carbs were the problem - nope, it's the fat.

I also think I have SIBO (sm intestinal bacterial overgrowth). Taking the antibiotic flagyl made me depressed (I think it temporarily increases endotoxins when it kills the bacteria.)

The Omega 3s (fish) are supposed to lower the endotoxins. So fish and just eating less food improves my mood. Still depressed, just not as depressed. And the less depression the better!
