Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners?

Posted by Roslynn on October 14, 2018, at 16:18:18

Hi all,

With the shortage of psychiatrists (especially those accepting Medicare), I've noticed more and more Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners showing up in my insurance lists.

Are they fully qualified to treat patients or do they have to practice under supervision of a psychiatrist? Do they have full prescribing privileges (such as xanax, etc.)?

Lastly, is this even a good idea? I mean obviously you want a doc, but could some of them be sharp, compassionate, up-to-date with the meds, etc?

Thank you for any insight!!
