I suggest strongly that you contact your Senators and your Congressman and complain about this SS Administration proposal. Yes, it is a very dramatic change in departure from the legal norm. Up to current, applying for SS disability is rather straightforward, you apply, you are either accepted or denied. If you appeal, you get a lawyer who specializes in SS Disability law and appeal, if you have a case you usually are awarded Disability.
But you are NOT adjudicated as a "mental defective.!" Nor as mentally incompetent or lacking mental capacity. Nor does the SS Administration enter your info into the FBI NICS database as a "prohibited person" from buying firearms.
I realize you might not care about the not being able to buy a firearm right now. My first couple years of depression were severe and I did not care about anything other than getting some relief from the illness. However as time went on and I did get some relief, old interests returned and I got into some deer hunting and also some laid back high power rifle competition shooting.
Never say never, you dont know what you might be into or doing five or ten years down the road. And once "adjudicated a mental defective," there is no going back. Sure you can get it appealed and reversed by paying a lawyer, going to court, etc. But who wants to do that????
SS Administration has no business doing what they are proposing to do, they are not a court. They are a federal administrative agency. The formal adjudication of people as "mental defectives" or determining them to be lacking mental capacity or whatever should be left to the court system and should be left adversarial and you should be physically present to be able to face the people attempting to get you adjudicated as...fill in the blank.
Like I said, spread the word to anybody who will listen. This applies to Americans only and phone, email and complain to your Senators and your Congressman in the next week.

They said i was incompetent to be referred for a job, but.....i can't live with that, i have to get a career, and do something with my life, yes the US government has helped me, but i really want to finish school and get a stable paying job, I've worked a lot in the past, the Gap, Eddie Bauer, various jobs, but from thet report on the psychological exams it said i "clearly" had mental deficits with processing information. So if that applies to me, that's not good. If they didn't take me off Dexedrine i would of not had any of these problems....the bozo doctors made a big deal with saying i had a problem, and they just let me deteriorate.
