I imagine the drug company felt the need to produce an extended-release formulation for some reason. My personal experience with Lamictal is that I cannot go 30 hours without relapsing. I need to dose other drugs 3x a day, so splitting the dose is no big deal to me. I like to keep blood levels as steady as possible.
Remember - with anticonvulsants, a small difference in blood levels can mean the difference between response and non-response. I think that's why changing from the GSK name brand to the Teva generic caused me to deteriorate.
