Not necessarily. Sometimes, after an infection, the immune system mistakenly attacks the brain long after the infection has disappeared. That's the contention of some researchers. There is a relatively new field of study called psychoneuroimmunology. It is a fact that inflammatory processes in the brain often occur in conjunction with affective disorders (Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder).
