They are related, true. I wouldn't say loxapine is atypical, but it may cause less EPS than other older antipsychotics. To be honest, both drugs were discontinued here many years ago, so I have no real experience with either. I believe amoxapine was briefly used for psychotic depression, but then standard prescribing of an AD + an AP once again became the norm.
