Taking 1 med to counter another?

I know I'm on here a lot lately.
My question is, if taking Geodon helps with depression, but makes me hyper & easily agitated, does it really make sense to have to take another med (Trileptal) to counter it?
Is this just the nature of the illness?
Main issue is irritability, anxiety, slight depression. But I have felt in the past that ADs and even Geodon have induced hypomania & sometimes irritability..
Maybe being a little miserable is better than walking around drugged up all the time?
I don't know anymore.
