Phillipa, No you cannot take Tramadol if you are taking an SSRI or any other antidepressant because Tramadol works on the same receptors in the brain. You could end up with serotonin overload which would be harmful.
I have a chronic bladder condition called IC and traditional pain killers do nothing for the pain of the flare ups. I don't take Tramadol everyday (wish I could I would be a well adjusted, happy person), I only take it when I am having a flare up of IC pain. It works. And I notice a huge difference in my personality. I don't feel drugged, drunk or goofy, just NOT depressed.
My bladder doc writes the RX for them and I only get 3 RXs a year. If I got more, I would totally take it everyday as my antidepressant med.
