In Canada, it is available as a generic; my Rx says "Apo-Modafinil", APO being one of the principal generic companies here. It costs me about $.90 / 100 mg tab (plus dispensing fee), but Canadian prices are usually substantially less than US.

Another option is Adrafinil, marketed in Europe but not in N.A. as far as I know. It is a precursor to Modafinil & some people prefer it as it has a slower onset. It's available on the web, usually cheaper than modafinil; in Canada, it's not scheduled at all, and I had a delivery checked & passed OK by customs. I don't know about U.S. & state laws. But I have had bad experiences with relying too much on web purchases; they can go missing for a number of reasons, leaving you high and dry & possibly out substantial $$.
