Carbohydrate depletion followed by carbohydrate loading can "puff" someone up to some degree. Bodybuilders sometimes use this trick in order to look more massive. Marathon runners do this, too, so as to increase their energy reserves. I don't know if this is what happened to Deneb, but I doubt edema was to blame for any perceived increase in size.
