Good for daytime somnolence: Nardil + Ritalin

Posted by pedr on November 12, 2010, at 23:52:09

Hi,
I have been on Nardil for nearly a year now and always had really bad trouble staying awake during the day. I'd fall asleep at my desk at work several times a day. I'd fall asleep standing up on the subway. During the day on the weekends. Pretty much any environment.

I tried provigil and that didn't feel like it did much. Then my PDoc suggested Ritalin, which is technically contraindicated. However he'd had 8/10 success with previous Nardil patients and frankly I was just sick of being so tired and such a liability during the afternoon.

So I started taking 5mg Ritalin on an as-needed basis, usually when I feel that strong, slow-breathing sleepiness rolling in. Since then I've not fallen asleep once. I still feel tired, but not leaden-limbed tired. I can still function and sometimes it makes me super-alert, like it must do for all the ADHD kids it's prescribed for.

Anyway, if anyone else out there is suffering from the daytime sleepiness, consider asking your PDoc for low-dose Ritalin. It's generic & cheap, fast-acting and non-addictive. Also, I'm on 90mg Nardil, which is quite a large dosage to combat!

HTH,
Pete
