Can Lithium raise blood pressure

Posted by kirbyw on December 7, 2009, at 12:02:24

For the last several months I have been on Parnate 20 or 30 mg daily. I am a recovering by-pass patient and also take Lopressor for blood pressure and heart rate. Generally, my problem has been that the combination of Lopressor and Parnate would lower my blood pressure too much like to 90/60 and I would feel kind of tired. But that was still ok, even though I didn't feel like exercising.

I started on Lithium to augment Parnate just 10 days ago. I was taking 300 mg at night. My first Lithium level 3 days ago was .3. Now I am taking Lithium 300 in the am and 300 before bed, (total is now 600 daily) and I have noticed that especially in the morning after my morning Lithium dose that my blood pressure is like 150/100. In fact today it was 160/100. But I am not sure if this is caused by the Lithium or something else. Eventually, if I take some additional Lopressor (a beta blocker) blood pressure seems to level off at about 130/90, but doesn't go much below that, even with Parnate. But thats basically ok.

So I am wondering if the Lithium could be affecting my blood pressure of it is something else. I haven't found much on the internet to indicate that Lithium raises blood pressure.
But I am wonder if anyone here has any info.
Rick
