I haven't needed a benzodiazepine for sleep in a long time. Ativan (lorazepam) usually serves me well. For me, it is clean. It does not give me a mild euphoric effect like Xanax (alprazolam) can. I also did not experience very much carry-over effect into the next day. I had actually combined Ativan with Halcion (triazolam) during a time when my treatment was producing total insomnia. I doubt you will see a doctor prescribe Halcion anymore. The drug fell out of favor when the media began to focus on the incidence of amnesia with Halcion. I doubt it is any worse than Ambien (zolpidem) in this regard. I liked temazepam (Restoril), which is metabolized into oxazepam. If you can manage to fall asleep, a drug like tempazepam will help you stay asleep. However, if you have trouble falling asleep, you will need something more potent. You might want to try zolpidem first and see if it will help you fall asleep. If it does, and you experience awakenings later at night, you can either increase the dosage or take temazepam or oxazepam along with the zolpidem to help get you through the rest of the night.
