Forgot to mention. Obviously the best thing to do is get the amalgams replaced.
Do a google search in your area for Biological Dentists who specialize in amalgam removal. Many of them subscribe to loan programs that allow people who can't afford it to get financial assistance. The interest rates on the loans are much much lower than a bank or anywhere else. Payment plans are pretty flexible. Check it out. Explain your financial situation to a caring Biological Dentist and it would not surprise me if they adjust their fees downward for you.
