I would think you would take the same total number of milligrams on either type, but the IR you would split to take multiple times a day. Effexor gave me headaches too, getting worse at higher doses, but not having enough antidepressant effect at lower doses. I first took Effexor before its maker released an XR form of the drug, and I think I took it some in morning and some in evening. Later I was on it in XR form, just once a day. In addition to the headaches, at high dose I felt like it made my cognition sort of cloudy.
