Lamictal stabilizes mood "from the bottom up," which makes it a good choice for treating a depressive episode. Lithium generally works "from the top down," which makes it a good choice for treating a manic episode. IMHO, Lamictal is worth a try. Are you taking any other medications besides lithium?
Another option would be an MAOI. Atypical depression responds well to MAOIs.
