I'm reading a running book right now that claimed outright that "running cures depression." I think I'm proof that running alone is not a cure.

All through my battles with depression, I've been able to stay focused on my running. I love being outside, in nature, and I think that my running, hiking, climbing and skiing keep me fit and feeling better overall. But, four years ago, I finished the toughest real 100 miler in the world (there is an event elsewhere that isn't really a run, but some sort of 100 mile scavenger hunt), and I was shocked by my reaction to finishing the race. Yes, I was exhausted after 6 months of intense training and 45+ hours of racing, but at the finish, I simply didn't care that much. This had been my dream for years, and yet I barely cared that I'd pulled it off. In my recovery from that race, I finally admitted to my wife that I needed to find a pdoc. She was thrilled because she and the kids had seen me become less happy and more withdrawn, and angry at times, over the past couple years. She wasn't thrilled that I'd acted like that, but because I recognized the issue myself and decided I needed help.

Not long after that, I found a pdoc who has been helping me ever since. Luckily, the combo of meds he has me on, including Cymbalta and Wellbutrin, has not affected my love of these sports or my desire to work hard and compete. I've had some other issues with Cymbalta (sexual side effects) and I'm working through those with my PCP and pdoc right now, but there's been no detriment to my exercise.

The 100 milers themselves are all over the place. I've run them in Arizona, Vermont, California, Colorado, Utah, and Ontario. It's not a big sport, but it's growing in popularity very quickly these days.
