Xanax is usually the least likely to cause or worsen depression. For some people it even has antidepressant properties. Stories of benzo depression are fairly common with diazepam or clonazepam, but much less frequent with alprazolam.
Best thing to do is call the doc and let him know immediately that diazepam has you more depressed and you would like a different benzo. If he tells you they are all the same except for their halflives, well, then you know he doesn't know squat what he's talking about. In any case, you gotta tell your doctor what's happening with diazepam. Ask to switch to alprazolam. And while you're at it, specify that you want the brand stuff, not the generic. More expensive but worth it. There is a difference.
